Reporting to the Editor-in-Chief, the Audience Engagement Editor oversees Prisms efforts to reach and grow new audiences. One of the primary responsibilities of the Audience Engagement Editor is cultivating and managing content distribution partnerships to get Prisms work out there (as opposed to editorial content creation partnerships, which will reside with the Editor-in-Chief). In addition, working collaboratively with the editorial team, the Audience Engagement Editor uses SEO, social media, email, and other strategies to identify the most effective ways to package and disseminate Prisms content to reach readers where they are, draw them in, and engage with them directly.

The Audience Engagement Editor understands how to use data and analytics to optimize our audience development and engagement strategies. As a member of the newsroom, the Audience Engagement Editor also takes the initiative to create standalone social-only content that reflects Prisms editorial mission. This position oversees our Digital Communications Manager.

This full-time position is remote; candidates from anywhere in the U.S. may apply.


Engagement Strategy and Analytics

Works with Prism staff to grow their presence on social media, and strategize on how best to tell stories via social

Works with the editorial team to maximize search engine optimization, including optimizing search terms; helps to workshop SEO-optimized headlines

Works with the editorial team on audience engagement strategies pegged to specific stories

Attracts and acquires new Prism audiences and deepens engagement with themincluding utilization of social, search, email, and third-party; establishes best practices for audience cultivation and engagement

Cultivates a loyal community of subject experts and ambassadors for Prism, with an eye to expanding and diversifying our audience

Cultivates and manages network of content distribution partnerships

Uses analytics and surveys to tell us more about who our audience is, and how and why they use our content, as well as to help us understand and expand our readership and help our journalism have greater impact

Uses data to make decisions about how and where to promote our work
Strategizes about how to distribute our work on off-site platforms like Apple News and Flipboard

Works with our Executive Director to grow our base of small donors

Manages our Digital Communications Manager and drives strategy behind copy produced and practices used for Prisms social media accounts, as well as production of live events

Content Creation

Is involved in the editorial process from start to finish: attends idea generation meetings, plans campaigns to support major editorial series, and executes those ideas to reach our audience

In close partnership with our editorial team, works on new products such as weekly newsletters to build new audiences and subscribers

Creates assetsincluding promos, show clips, audiograms, and quote graphicsto promote our live events, series, etc.

Oversees brand integration and quality control across social media and digital platforms


The successful candidate will demonstrate:

Commitment to racial justice, economic justice, and gender justice

Cultural competency with BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities

Three to five years experience in managing social accounts, building audience engagement strategy, or similar

Fluency in a variety of social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube at minimum) and publishing software (e.g. Hootsuite, Sprinklr, Sprout Social)

Solid knowledge of website analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics, NetInsight, Omniture, WebTrends) and website content management best practices

Up-to-date familiarity with the latest trends and best practices in online marketing and measurement

Ability to pivot from strong analytical and data-driven thinking to highly creative thinking

Alignment with Prisms values and mission

Additional ideal (but not required) skills include:

Experience leading and managing SEO/SEM, marketing database, email, social media and/or display advertising campaigns

Experience in optimizing landing pages and user funnels

Experience with A/B and multivariate experiments

Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript development and constraints

Experience in setting up and optimizing Google Adwords campaigns


Starting salary will be between $65-75K.
