Director, Military Family Research & Insights

The Director, Military Family Research & Insights, leads NMFAs efforts to generate insights in areas critical to military family well-being (e.g., health, financial security, children, education) and contributes to cultivating a feedback loop across the military community and within NMFA. The Director is responsible to the Executive Director for developing and executing NMFAs insights agenda in support of NMFA being the recognized voice of military families and the leader in empowering military families..

Responsibilities

The Director, Military Family Research & Insights will:

  • Develop NMFAs Insight agenda in consultation with the Executive Director, NMFAs leadership team, and the Board of Governors Military Family Research Committee
  • Build and maintain an internal insights capability (research, analysis, publication, etc.) to support NMFAs strategic objectives
  • Develop and lead a team of high performing insights professionals with primary focus on quantitative research methods and a strong understanding of qualitative and mixed methods
  • Engage external partners to develop and execute the NMFA Insight agenda inclusive of other military service organizations, academic institutions, and research organizations
  • Serve as a spokesperson for NMFA by sharing insights with external stakeholders: legislators, policy makers, military families, donors, media, and the public
  • Support NMFAs other areas of Programming in the following ways:

    • Government Relations:

      • Identify emerging issues and assess potential solutions
      • Conduct research that informs the scale and potential impact of legislative and policy solutions, as well as testimony, public statements, and articles
      • Develop relationships with other military family-serving organizations to collaborate on research
      • Develop and execute pulse polls on a quarterly basis

    • Military Family Programs

      • Share peer-reviewed research regarding military families
      • Survey military families to determine issues of importance to help guide future programming
      • Provide input on program evaluation and assessment
      • Advise on survey design and response collection to improve the value of the responses
      • Research and implement data survey tools, and analysis and reporting software

    • Community Engagement generate data and insights for use in:

      • Advocacy campaigns
      • Improvement of targeting of web and social campaigns
      • Donor engagement to make a case for support and demonstrate impact of donor dollars

    • Responsible for the daily operational and management of the Military Family Research & Insights Department to include:

      • Manage all staff and activities relating to military community research strategy and execution
      • Develop and maintain the departmental budget
      • Develop and implement the department tactical plan in support of NMFAs strategic plan
      • Provide input and assistance as required to all Association departments
      • Engage the NMFA Board of Governors Military Family Research Committee for guidance

    • Collaborate with the Advancement team to secure funding to support NMFAs Insights objectives and resource requirements

Job Qualifications and Competencies

  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement research projects, from inception to publication, with at least 3 years of demonstrated research experience
  • Proven experience in quantitative research methods as well as a strong understanding of qualitative and mixed methods as demonstrated in published studies
  • Experience in building and leading teams
  • Deep understanding of and commitment to the military family community
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Public speaking experience
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills
  • Attention to detail
  • High degree of professionalism
  • Extensive quantitative and qualitative research experience as demonstrated through the achievement of an advanced degree or relevant work experience
  • In-depth understanding of Microsoft Office suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, etc.) preferred

Compensation
